One result does not describe a person's fertility in isolation; illness, fever, medicines, timing, and collection problems can affect the sample. Your clinician may recommend repeating the test or combining it with hormone tests, examination, or other fertility investigations.

Follow the laboratory's instructions about abstinence, medicines, and the collection container. Wash your hands, collect the entire sample as directed, and tell staff if any was missed or spilled. Keep the sample at the instructed temperature and deliver it within the stated time. Do not use ordinary lubricants or a household container, because they can interfere with the analysis. Ask when results will be ready and whether a repeat sample is needed.
