What to Expect from Sclerotherapy for Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis is linked with long-term venous pressure, often around the lower legs and ankles. Sclerotherapy places a medicine into selected surface veins so they close and blood can be redirected through healthier pathways. It treats contributing veins; it does not replace care for inflamed, dry, or broken skin.

During a consultation, the clinician may examine swelling, colour changes, ulcers, and visible veins and may use ultrasound to plan treatment. The number and location of injections depend on the veins involved. Stinging, tenderness, bruising, or temporary firmness can occur around injection sites.

Tell the clinic about medicines, allergies, previous clots, reduced mobility, pregnancy, and any open or infected skin. Follow instructions about skincare and clothing before the appointment. After treatment, you may be advised to walk gently and use compression if it is suitable for you. Keep the treated area clean, avoid rubbing it, and attend planned reviews so skin changes and circulation can be checked.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, swelling, redness, warmth, or skin breakdown is increasing instead of settling. Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, faintness, or marked one-sided leg swelling and pain. A new or worsening wound near the ankle also needs prompt assessment, particularly if drainage or fever develops.

Ask which veins are contributing to your symptoms, whether ultrasound is needed, what compression plan fits your circulation, how existing dermatitis will be treated, and which activities or medicines need adjusting before and after injections.
