What to Expect from RF Microneedling for Acne Scars

RF microneedling places tiny needles into selected skin depths and releases radiofrequency energy beneath the surface. This creates controlled points of injury and heat that can stimulate collagen remodelling. The clinician may adjust depth around different scar types and facial zones. A topical anaesthetic is commonly used, but pressure, prickling, warmth, or brief tenderness can still be felt.

After treatment, pinpoint marks, redness, swelling, roughness, or sensitivity can occur. Acne scars do not all respond in the same way: rolling, boxcar, and ice-pick scars may need different approaches, and active acne or inflamed skin may need attention first. Improvement is gradual and may require a planned course.

Tell the clinician about active acne, cold sores, eczema, medicines that affect healing, a tendency to form raised scars, and recent tanning or procedures. Arrive with clean skin if instructed. Afterward, use the recommended gentle cleanser and barrier-supporting product, avoid picking or exfoliation, and protect your face from sunlight. Keep makeup and active ingredients off the skin until the clinic says they can be resumed.

Call the clinic if swelling or pain is worsening, redness spreads, pus-like drainage appears, blisters form, or the skin becomes increasingly hot. Fever or a flare of painful acne also merits advice. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or for an eye-area reaction that affects vision.

Ask which scar types are present, what needle depths and energy settings are planned, how acne will be controlled, what downtime to expect, and whether subcision, peels, laser treatment, or another option should be considered.
