What to expect from reverse shoulder replacement for rotator cuff tear

In a reverse replacement, the positions of the ball and socket are changed. This lets the deltoid muscle contribute more to lifting the arm when a substantial rotator cuff tear cannot do so effectively. The operation does not restore the torn tendon itself, and the expected movement depends on shoulder condition, muscle function, bone quality and other medical factors.

After surgery, the arm is usually supported while the tissues heal. Physiotherapy begins with safe movement and shoulder-blade or elbow exercises, then advances to active lifting and functional tasks. The therapist will explain limits on reaching, pushing, pulling and weight through the arm because certain positions can place stress on the new joint.

Arrange help with dressing, washing and household tasks while the arm is protected. Keep the wound area clean as instructed, use the sling or support according to your surgical plan and perform only the exercises provided. Do not lift, force the shoulder or reach suddenly behind you until cleared. Attend follow-up visits so healing, movement and implant position can be checked.

Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain or a sudden loss of movement. Seek urgent care after a fall, a visible change in shoulder shape, severe swelling, new numbness or a hand that becomes cold or pale. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency attention.

Ask why a reverse replacement fits your tear, which movements are restricted, how long the sling is expected to be used, when driving or work can resume and what lifting limit applies. Ask how your current deltoid strength and other shoulder problems may affect the plan.
