What to expect from radiotherapy for tongue cancer

A radiation team first maps the tongue and nearby tissues so the treatment can be aimed at the intended area. You may have an individually fitted mask to help keep your head still during each visit. The treatment itself is not felt, although positioning and the mask can feel unfamiliar.

Changes often build gradually. Your mouth or throat may become sore, saliva may feel thicker or drier, and foods may taste different. Swallowing can become harder, especially if treatment reaches nearby throat tissues. Tiredness and skin irritation around the treated area may also occur. Your team can review pain relief, mouth rinses, nutrition and swallowing support as symptoms develop.

Attend the dental assessment arranged before treatment and tell the team about dentures, fillings, mouth ulcers or loose teeth. Use only mouth products recommended by your clinicians, keep the mouth gently clean, and choose soft, moist foods if chewing or swallowing hurts. Frequent sips and dietitian guidance can help when saliva changes make eating difficult.

Keep appointments even when you feel well, because checks can identify changes early. Ask whether medicines, supplements or smoking and alcohol habits could affect your mouth or recovery. Rest between activities, but maintain gentle movement if your team says it is suitable.

Contact your oncology team promptly if mouth or throat pain prevents drinking, swallowing becomes suddenly worse, you cannot keep fluids down, or you notice signs of dehydration such as very dark urine, dizziness or unusual weakness. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, or swelling that rapidly worsens.

Ask which parts of the tongue and neck will be treated, whether chemotherapy is planned, how dental care will be coordinated, and who to call outside clinic hours. You can also ask about speech and swallowing therapy, expected taste changes, and support for eating during treatment.
