What to expect from radiotherapy for nasal and sinus cancer

Planning uses scans and a firm mask or support may hold your head still. The radiation team positions you carefully, then delivers external-beam treatment while you remain alone in the room but in contact with staff. The beams are not felt and do not make you radioactive. Treatment may include areas near the nose, sinuses, cheek, palate, eyes or brain, so the plan is tailored closely to the tumour location.

Nasal blockage, dryness, crusting, reduced smell, skin irritation, mouth soreness, taste changes or tiredness may develop gradually. Some people notice watering or irritation around an eye. Tell the team about each change; prescribed rinses, skin care or other treatment can make symptoms more manageable.

Use nasal or mouth rinses only as instructed, and keep the mouth clean with a soft toothbrush. Avoid picking crusts, smoking, strong fragrances and unapproved creams in the treatment field. Protect facial skin from sun, heat and rubbing. Eat soft, moist foods if chewing or swallowing is uncomfortable, and ask for nutrition support early. Report vision changes, facial swelling, dental concerns or a history of sinus surgery before treatment begins. Rest when fatigue rises and keep appointments.

Contact your treatment team promptly for persistent nosebleeds, worsening facial swelling, severe headache, eye pain, new vision changes, fever, increasing mouth sores or difficulty drinking. Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding that will not stop, sudden loss of vision, severe breathing difficulty, confusion or new weakness. Follow your centre's after-hours instructions if symptoms appear between visits.
