What to expect from radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma

Your team uses examination and imaging to define the lymph-node regions needing treatment while limiting exposure to nearby organs. A planning visit may include marks on the skin or a moulded support to help reproduce your position. Each session is delivered while you lie still; staff can see and speak with you throughout.

Many people notice tiredness as visits continue. The skin over the treated field may become warm, dry, itchy or tender. The exact effects depend on the body area, previous treatment and the treatment plan. Follow-up checks help the team review symptoms and recovery.

Keep your appointment schedule and tell the team about medicines, pregnancy possibility or previous radiotherapy. Wear loose clothing that leaves the planned area easy to access. Wash gently, pat the skin dry and use only products recommended by your team. Rest between activities, but gentle movement can help you stay active if you feel able.

Do not remove treatment marks or apply heat, ice or adhesive dressings to the treated skin without advice. Let the team know about new pain, itching, cough, swallowing trouble or breathlessness so support can be arranged.

Call your oncology team if skin becomes very sore, blistered or broken, fatigue stops you managing basic activities, or a new symptom is worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness or swelling of the face or neck.

Ask which lymph-node areas are included, how the plan protects the heart, lungs or other nearby organs, whether you need special skin care, and how follow-up will be arranged. Ask what symptoms should be reported the same day and whether work or exercise needs adjustment.
