What to expect from pulsed dye laser treatment for post-inflammatory erythema

Post-inflammatory erythema consists of red or pink marks left after inflammation such as acne, irritation, or an injury has settled. Pulsed dye laser is absorbed by blood vessels near the skin surface and may gradually reduce the visible redness. It is generally considered only after the underlying inflammation is controlled and the skin surface has healed.

You may feel brief snaps, heat, or stinging as each pulse is delivered. The treated marks can look brighter, darker, or more swollen at first. Colour changes are reviewed as the skin recovers rather than judged immediately after the appointment.

Tell the clinician about active acne, eczema, infection, recent tanning, medicines, cold sores, and past reactions to lasers. Do not conceal a new rash or broken skin, because treatment may need to wait until the area is calm and intact.

Use the recommended gentle skincare, leave flakes or crusts alone, and avoid heat, friction, and direct sunlight while healing. Apply sun protection as advised, since ultraviolet exposure can make post-treatment colour changes more noticeable. Continue prescribed acne or rosacea care only as directed.

Contact the clinic if pain or swelling is escalating, blisters are extensive, the area becomes hot and increasingly tender, or pus, fever, or spreading redness appears. Urgent care is appropriate for breathing difficulty or sudden facial swelling. A persistent wound or unexpected pale or dark patch should be examined.

Ask whether all active inflammation has settled, whether your mark is more red than brown, how your skin tone affects the risk of colour change, which products to pause, and when progress should be reviewed.
