What to expect from pulsed dye laser treatment for port wine stain

A port wine stain is a capillary malformation made up of visible small blood vessels in the skin. Pulsed dye laser light is absorbed by blood within those vessels and turns into heat, which can make the mark lighter over time. It treats colour rather than removing skin, and the response varies with the stain’s depth, location, age, and skin tone.

The pulses may feel like warm snaps or elastic-band flicks. Cooling and protective eyewear help make the session more comfortable. The area can be red, swollen, purple, or darker immediately after treatment; these changes usually form part of the healing response.

Share your medical history, medicines, previous laser reactions, cold sore history, recent tanning, and any tendency to develop dark or light marks after inflammation. The clinician will choose settings and decide whether numbing or other comfort measures are appropriate.

Keep the treated skin clean, do not rub or peel it, and follow instructions for ointment or dressings. Avoid unapproved cosmetics and direct sun while the skin is recovering. Attend review appointments so the response can guide any further sessions.

Call the clinic if swelling, pain, blistering, crusting, or redness becomes increasingly severe, spreads beyond the treated area, or is accompanied by discharge or fever.
