What to expect from physiotherapy for a wrist sprain

Short answer

Physiotherapy for a wrist sprain usually starts with an assessment, then uses protected movement, gradual strengthening and advice for daily tasks.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early aim
Protect healing tissue while maintaining safe finger and wrist movement
Later aim
Restore grip, forearm control and everyday hand use

What rehabilitation addresses

At the first appointment, the therapist may review how the injury occurred and check swelling, tenderness, wrist and finger movement, grip, sensation and the way the hand is used. A sprain can involve different supporting ligaments, so the programme depends on the examination and any imaging or splint advice from your clinician. Early care may focus on comfortable motion and reducing stiffness while protecting healing tissue. Later work targets grip, forearm control and confidence with lifting or weight-bearing through the hand.

What you can do between visits

Use a brace only as directed and keep the wrist in the position recommended for your injury. Complete the prescribed finger, wrist or forearm exercises slowly, and avoid testing strength with heavy gripping before you are cleared. Ice, elevation or other comfort measures may be suggested for swelling. Practise ordinary tasks in stages: begin with light activities, then increase duration or load when the wrist responds well. Report clicking, catching, increasing swelling or pain that remains elevated after exercise.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt assessment for increasing deformity, severe swelling, a cold or pale hand, new numbness, inability to move the fingers, or pain that is severe after a new injury. A wrist sprain can resemble a fracture or a more significant ligament injury, especially when tenderness persists or gripping remains very difficult. Seek urgent care for an open wound, rapidly changing colour, or loss of circulation. Do not use exercise to push through these signs.

Useful questions

Ask whether you need imaging or a brace, which movements are safe at this stage, when lifting and sport can resume, and how much soreness after exercise is acceptable. Clarify how to protect the wrist during work and when a review is needed if grip or motion stalls.

Questions people ask

Should I keep my wrist completely still?

Only for the period and activities advised for your injury; prolonged restriction can contribute to stiffness, so follow the prescribed movement plan.

When can I return to sport?

Return is usually graded after movement, strength and task-specific control have improved, with timing decided by your clinician.
