Short answer

Physiotherapy for thoracic outlet syndrome may address posture, breathing, shoulder control, and nerve or blood-vessel irritation through carefully graded movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common targets
Breathing, shoulder control, and upper-back mobility
Exercise approach
Low-load movement progressed according to symptoms

What the assessment may include

The thoracic outlet is the passage between the neck, upper ribs, and shoulder. A therapist may examine neck and shoulder movement, breathing pattern, muscle balance, arm symptoms, sensation, and circulation. They may ask whether symptoms change with overhead work, carrying, prolonged sitting, or a particular sleeping position. Because nerve and blood-vessel symptoms can overlap, the assessment also helps identify when physiotherapy is not the only care needed.

How sessions may develop

Treatment can include relaxed breathing, mobility for the upper back and ribs, gentle stretching when appropriate, and exercises that improve shoulder-blade position and control. Your home plan may begin with low-load movements and progress as arm symptoms settle. You may need to change carrying habits, overhead duration, desk setup, or backpack use. Reproduce symptoms only under the therapist’s instructions; forceful stretching can irritate sensitive nerves.

When to seek urgent advice

Get prompt medical help for a swollen, pale, blue, or unusually cold arm, sudden severe arm pain, rapidly increasing weakness, or new loss of hand function. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden neurological symptoms require urgent care. Contact your clinician if exercises consistently increase tingling, numbness, or arm heaviness rather than easing it.

Questions to bring

Ask whether your symptoms appear mainly nerve-related, circulation-related, or musculoskeletal; which activities to modify; and how improvement will be tracked. Ask what changes should trigger vascular, neurological, or specialist review.

Questions people ask

Can physiotherapy make symptoms worse at first?

Some exercises may briefly reveal sensitivity, but persistent or escalating numbness, weakness, or colour change should be reported promptly.

Can you continue overhead activity?

Your therapist may modify the duration, load, and position while symptoms are assessed rather than asking you to repeatedly work through arm heaviness.
