What to expect from physiotherapy for rheumatoid arthritis

Short answer
Expect a tailored programme for joint protection, mobility, strength, fatigue management and safer performance of everyday activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Core aims
- Maintain function while protecting inflamed joints
- Flexible element
- Intensity changes with flares and fatigue
What happens at the assessment
Rheumatoid arthritis can affect several joints and may change from day to day. Your physiotherapist will discuss pain, swelling, stiffness, fatigue, work and home tasks. They may assess joint movement, muscle strength, walking, balance and how you use your hands. The findings guide support that respects inflamed joints and your current energy rather than applying one routine to everyone.
How the plan may help
Treatment can include gentle mobility, strengthening when inflammation is controlled, posture and walking practice, and advice on pacing. A therapist may teach joint-protection techniques, suggest equipment or involve occupational therapy for hand and household tasks. During a flare, reduce intensity and keep comfortable movement; tell your rheumatology team if swelling or stiffness is changing.
When to seek medical care
Contact your medical team if several joints become more swollen, fatigue sharply worsens, or function declines despite your plan. Get urgent help for a hot swollen joint with fever, sudden weakness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or new numbness with loss of movement. Physiotherapy cannot assess every cause of a sudden change.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which exercises are suitable during active inflammation, how to protect a painful hand or foot, and what signs mean you should pause strengthening. Discuss whether splints, aids or occupational therapy could make dressing, cooking or walking safer.
