What to expect from physiotherapy for psoriatic arthritis

Short answer
Expect physiotherapy to combine joint-friendly movement, strength, pacing and practical advice shaped around your psoriatic arthritis symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the assessment covers
Psoriatic arthritis may affect joints, tendons, the spine or the feet, and symptoms can vary over time. Your physiotherapist will discuss swollen or painful areas, stiffness, fatigue, work and home demands. They may assess movement, muscle control, posture and walking. This helps them choose activities that support function without overloading an irritated joint.
Building a workable plan
Sessions may include mobility exercises, strengthening around affected joints, posture or hand exercises, and advice about pacing. During a flare, the plan may shift towards comfortable movement and rest breaks; when symptoms are calmer, strengthening can progress. Ask for alternatives if gripping, kneeling or weight-bearing aggravates symptoms. Keep taking prescribed disease-controlling treatment and share changes in swelling or fatigue with your clinical team.
When to seek medical care
Tell your rheumatology team if swelling, warmth, pain or morning stiffness is increasing, or if fatigue is interfering with basic activities. Seek urgent assessment for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, sudden loss of movement, new limb weakness, or new bladder or bowel problems.
Useful questions
Ask how to modify exercises during a flare, which joints need protection, and whether an occupational therapist, splint or walking aid could help. Discuss how progress will be measured in tasks such as opening containers, climbing stairs or walking outdoors.

Questions people ask
Can physiotherapy help during a flare?
It can provide gentle movement and pacing strategies, but the programme may need to be reduced while active inflammation is reviewed.
Do I still need rheumatology care?
Yes. Physiotherapy supports function; rheumatology treatment addresses the inflammatory disease.
