What to expect from physiotherapy for a meniscus tear

Short answer
Physiotherapy for a meniscus tear may include an assessment of knee movement and stability, exercises for strength and control, and a gradual return to the activities that matter to you.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main aims
- Comfortable movement, strength and knee control
- Progression
- Based on symptoms and function
What the sessions may involve
A physiotherapist may ask how the injury happened and examine swelling, bending and straightening, walking, tenderness and symptoms such as catching. The findings help determine which movements are suitable and whether you need medical review for another knee problem.
Exercises can target the quadriceps, hamstrings, hips and trunk, alongside balance and controlled weight-bearing. If symptoms settle, the programme may progress towards squatting, stairs, lifting or sport-specific movements.
Your role in recovery
Practise the prescribed exercises with the recommended technique and frequency. Avoid repeatedly testing a painful twist or deep bend, and tell the therapist if the knee swells after activity or does not fully straighten.
Use pacing: alternate demanding tasks with easier movement, and build activity in small steps. Your therapist can help adapt work, household tasks and exercise while the knee is being assessed or rehabilitated.
When to contact a clinician
Arrange prompt assessment for a knee that locks, gives way repeatedly, becomes substantially more swollen after a new injury, or cannot bear weight. Fever with a hot, red knee, or new calf swelling and pain, requires urgent medical attention.
Useful questions
Ask whether the tear needs an orthopaedic review, which activities to pause, how to judge a safe progression, and what to do if locking or swelling continues.

Questions people ask
Can physiotherapy treat every meniscus tear?
The appropriate plan depends on the tear, symptoms, examination and any associated injury; some situations need medical or surgical assessment as well.
What if an exercise causes swelling?
Pause that progression and tell your physiotherapist, who can review the dose, technique and next step.
