What to expect from physiotherapy for flat feet

Short answer
Expect an examination of foot posture, ankle movement, balance, and walking, followed by exercises and footwear or activity advice tailored to your symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What physiotherapy may assess
Flat feet can look different from one person to another, and an arch that appears low does not automatically cause a problem. Your physiotherapist may observe you standing and walking, check whether the arch changes with movement, and assess ankle flexibility, calf length, balance, foot control, and strength up the leg. The conversation may focus on pain, fatigue, footwear, work, running, or difficulty standing. Treatment might include calf and foot strengthening, balance practice, movement retraining, and advice about gradually changing activity.
Practising between visits
Follow the exercise dose that was prescribed and perform it with controlled foot and ankle alignment. Wear footwear that feels supportive for the activities you are doing, and introduce longer walks, running, or standing periods in small steps. Bring any inserts or orthotics to an appointment so their fit and purpose can be discussed. Persistent soreness, rubbing, or altered walking is a reason to report the issue and adjust the plan.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment for a new one-sided change in foot shape, sudden inability to bear weight, marked swelling, redness with warmth, or pain after an injury. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale foot, new severe weakness, or significant numbness. A child with painful or rapidly changing foot posture also needs clinical evaluation rather than relying on exercises alone.
Questions to take along
Ask whether your foot posture is linked to your symptoms, which muscles need attention, and how to progress walking or sport. Ask whether footwear or an orthotic trial is appropriate and how its benefit will be checked.

Questions people ask
Can exercises create an arch?
Exercises may improve strength and control, but their main purpose is often better comfort and function rather than changing foot shape.
Do all flat feet need orthotics?
No. The need depends on symptoms, activity, examination findings, and how you respond to simpler measures.
