What to expect from physiotherapy for chronic ankle instability

Short answer
Expect physiotherapy to assess ankle control and build strength, balance and movement confidence through a graded rehabilitation programme.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Core targets
- Strength, balance, reaction and landing control
- Progression
- From stable exercises to uneven ground and direction changes
What happens in an assessment
The therapist may ask about previous sprains, episodes of giving way, uneven-ground problems and your work or sport. They can check swelling, ankle range, calf and foot strength, single-leg balance and how the knee and hip control movement. Treatment often progresses from comfortable mobility and muscle activation to resistance work, balance challenges, hopping or direction changes when appropriate.
Your part in rehabilitation
Practise the prescribed exercises regularly and use stable footwear during activities that challenge your ankle. Begin balance work near something solid to hold, and increase surface difficulty or speed only when control is reliable. A brace or taping may be discussed for selected activities, but it does not replace strength and coordination training. Report swelling, sharp pain or repeated giving-way.
When to seek medical care
Arrange assessment if the ankle cannot bear weight, becomes very swollen, looks deformed or has severe pain after a new injury. Seek prompt care for a cold or pale foot, new loss of sensation, or rapidly increasing redness and warmth. Repeated instability despite a consistent programme may warrant review for ligament, tendon, cartilage or bone problems.
Questions to ask
Ask when you can return to running or court sports, whether support is useful, how to test readiness, and what to do after another rolling episode.

Questions people ask
Can physiotherapy stop my ankle from giving way?
It can improve strength, balance and movement reactions, although the programme and response vary between people.
Will I need an ankle brace?
A brace may help during selected activities, especially early on, but a clinician should match support to your ankle and rehabilitation goals.
