What to expect from physiotherapy for carpal tunnel syndrome

Short answer

Physiotherapy for carpal tunnel syndrome usually combines wrist protection, symptom-guided movement, nerve-friendly exercises, and changes to aggravating tasks.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens in the assessment

A therapist may ask about tingling, numbness, night symptoms, grip, and tasks that require typing, gripping, or vibrating tools. They can check sensation, hand and wrist movement, strength, and the way the wrist is positioned during activities. Treatment may include education, a night splint that keeps the wrist near neutral, gentle tendon or nerve-gliding exercises, and adjustments to workstation or tool use. Exercises should not reproduce or spread tingling.

Supporting your recovery

Wear a recommended splint as directed and avoid prolonged bent-wrist positions, especially during sleep or sustained tasks. Take brief movement breaks, loosen a forceful grip, and keep frequently used items within easy reach where possible. Practise only the exercises prescribed for you. Tell the therapist if numbness becomes constant, grip is declining, or symptoms are waking you more often, because these changes may require medical reassessment.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical review for persistent numbness, increasing weakness, dropping objects, or visible wasting at the base of the thumb. Seek urgent care after a serious hand injury or if the hand becomes suddenly cold, pale, or severely painful.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether nerve testing is needed, how long to try splinting and therapy, and which findings would make a specialist or surgical opinion appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can physiotherapy reverse nerve compression?

It may reduce aggravating pressure and support hand use, but ongoing weakness or sensory loss needs medical review.

Should exercises cause tingling?

They should be gentle and symptom-guided; stop and report increased or spreading tingling rather than pushing through it.
