What to expect from pelvic floor physiotherapy for pelvic girdle pain

Short answer
For pelvic girdle pain, pelvic floor physiotherapy assesses how your pelvis moves and how muscles share load, then uses gentle exercises, pacing and practical movement advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Symphysis pubis dysfunction may refer to pubic-area pain
What the physiotherapist checks
Pelvic girdle pain can affect the pubic area, one or both sides of the pelvis, the buttocks or the lower back. It may be more noticeable when walking, turning in bed, climbing stairs, standing on one leg or getting in and out of a car. Symphysis pubis dysfunction is an older term sometimes used for pain near the pubic joint.
Your appointment may cover pregnancy or postpartum changes, previous injuries, daily demands and movements that provoke pain. The physiotherapist may observe your walking, balance, hip range and trunk control, and gently assess the pelvis. An internal pelvic floor assessment is not automatically part of the visit.
What treatment can look like
The plan may include comfortable pelvic floor activation, relaxation, breathing, hip and trunk exercises, support for the pelvic joints, and advice on rolling, stairs, lifting and getting dressed. Some people benefit from a belt or other support after an individual assessment.
Break demanding activities into manageable parts and change position regularly. Keep movements within a tolerable range rather than pushing through sharp pain. Ask how to modify exercise, work and caring tasks; the right adjustment can reduce repeated strain while you remain active.
When to seek medical attention
Seek prompt medical advice for severe pain after a fall, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, vaginal bleeding in pregnancy, or pain with regular contractions. Urgent assessment is also needed for sudden severe abdominal or pelvic pain. A physiotherapist can help with movement, but these signs need medical evaluation.
Questions to ask
Ask whether your symptoms fit pelvic girdle pain, which movements should be modified, whether a support belt is suitable, and how pregnancy or recovery stage changes the exercise plan.
