Short answer

For metastatic breast cancer, palliative radiotherapy focuses on a troublesome site, usually over a short schedule, to ease symptoms while your wider cancer treatment and supportive care continue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Control a selected symptom or local problem.
Treatment area
The target may be bone, brain, chest wall or another affected site.
Care alongside it
Pain relief and other oncology treatments may continue.

What the plan may involve

Metastatic breast cancer can affect different areas, so the experience depends on whether the target is bone, the brain, the chest wall, or another site. Your team reviews scans, symptoms and previous treatments before choosing the radiation field and dose. You may have a planning scan and positioning supports to help reproduce the same position.

Radiotherapy does not treat every area of metastatic disease. It is used to address a particular symptom or local risk, such as pain, pressure or bleeding. The treated area may feel temporarily more irritated, and tiredness is common. Effects such as skin change, nausea or headache depend on where radiation is aimed.

Preparing for treatment

Tell the radiation and breast oncology teams about all medicines, recent treatments, implanted devices, pregnancy possibility and any difficulty lying flat or travelling. Keep taking symptom medicines unless you are told otherwise. Plan rest after appointments and ask about help with childcare, transport or household tasks if fatigue limits you.

Write down the symptom being treated and how it changes during the day. Bring this record to review visits. Ask how radiotherapy fits with chemotherapy, targeted treatment, hormone treatment or other medicines, because schedules may need coordinating.

When to seek urgent help

Contact your care team quickly for worsening pain, new bleeding, repeated vomiting, a spreading skin reaction or difficulty taking medicines. Seek emergency care for sudden weakness, seizure, severe headache with confusion, severe breathlessness, chest pain, or new loss of bladder or bowel control.

Questions for your doctor

Which metastatic site is being treated and what symptom should improve? How will this fit with my other cancer medicines? What should I expect on the treatment day, and which changes need same-day advice?

Questions people ask

Is palliative radiotherapy a replacement for my breast cancer treatment?

It usually addresses a selected site or symptom while systemic and supportive treatments are considered separately.

Will side effects be the same for everyone?

No; effects vary with the body area treated, the schedule and your existing health.
