What to expect from osteotomy for bow legs

Bow legs, also called genu varum, place the leg axis toward the outside. An osteotomy creates a controlled bone cut, often near the knee, and adjusts the angle so forces pass more evenly through the limb. Plates, screws or another fixation method keep the correction in position.

Expect swelling, bruising and stiffness around the operated area. The correction is visible gradually as swelling settles, while bone healing is checked at follow-up. The exact technique depends on age, the location of the bend and the condition of the knee.

Plan transport and assistance at home before admission. Clear walking routes, place frequently used items within reach, and practise using crutches or a walker if advised. Take prescribed medicines as directed and keep the incision clean according to the discharge instructions.

Physiotherapy may include knee and ankle movement, thigh activation and later gait training. Increase standing and walking only within the limits set by your surgeon. Avoid running, jumping and heavy lifting until the bone and fixation are ready.

Seek prompt advice for spreading redness, pus-like drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, increasing calf tenderness or new weakness. Emergency help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or numb.

Ask where the bone will be cut, whether the correction affects the knee joint, when you may put weight on the leg, how long you may need a walking aid, and when physiotherapy can advance.
