What to expect from oral rehydration therapy for norovirus infection

Norovirus infection commonly causes sudden vomiting, watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever. Oral rehydration solution is designed with water, salts, and glucose to help the intestine absorb fluid. It does not kill the virus or immediately stop bowel symptoms, but it can help reduce the effects of fluid loss while the illness settles.

Drink frequent small sips of prepared solution. After vomiting, wait briefly before trying again and use smaller amounts if needed. Continue as tolerated with light foods when you feel able, and follow the mixing instructions exactly. Wash hands with soap and water, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and clean contaminated surfaces because norovirus spreads readily.

Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, become confused or faint, pass very little urine, have blood in vomit or stool, or develop severe or worsening abdominal pain. Contact a clinician sooner for a young child, an older adult, pregnancy, or a long-term illness where fluid loss may become serious more quickly.
