What to expect from oral corticosteroid treatment for hives

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can move to different areas of the skin. An oral corticosteroid can dampen inflammation, but it does not identify or remove the trigger and may not be suitable for every episode. A clinician may consider it when symptoms are extensive, intense, or not settling with the initial plan.

Possible effects include increased appetite, indigestion, restlessness, sleep changes, mood changes, and a temporary rise in blood glucose. Tell the prescriber about diabetes, pregnancy, infection, stomach disease, or other medicines before taking it.

Take the medicine at the prescribed time and for the prescribed course. Do not borrow tablets, repeat an old prescription, or stop a longer course without instructions. Keep notes about new foods, medicines, infections, products, or physical triggers that preceded the welts.

Avoid scratching, use cool measures if advised, and follow the plan for any non-steroid treatment. If hives keep returning, arrange review so the pattern and possible causes can be assessed rather than repeatedly self-treating.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; wheezing; faintness; or sudden weakness. Hives with these symptoms may be part of a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt clinical advice for fever, painful rather than itchy lesions, bruising, blistering, or hives that remain fixed in one place.
