What to expect from oral corticosteroid treatment for angioedema

Angioedema is deeper swelling under the skin or lining of the mouth and airways. Corticosteroids reduce inflammatory activity, so a clinician may include them in a plan for an episode linked to an allergic or inflammatory trigger. They are not a substitute for emergency treatment when breathing or swallowing is affected, and they may not help every form of angioedema, including some inherited or medicine-related patterns.

Swelling can take time to settle even after treatment begins. Your clinician may also use another medicine or recommend avoiding a suspected trigger while the cause is clarified.

Follow the prescribed dose and timing, and do not repeat leftover tablets for a new episode without medical guidance. Tell your clinician whether the swelling affects the face, lips, tongue, hands, feet, or abdomen, how quickly it appeared, and whether hives or itching occurred. Mention asthma, diabetes, infection, stomach problems, and all current medicines.

Keep an agreed emergency plan accessible. If your clinician has prescribed emergency medicines, learn when and how to use them. Record foods, medicines, stings, or other exposures before an episode when possible.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, hoarse voice, trouble breathing, wheezing, drooling, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt review for rapidly spreading swelling, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, or swelling that does not improve as expected. Do not wait for a steroid tablet to work when the airway may be involved.

Ask what type of angioedema you may have, whether corticosteroids are appropriate for your pattern, what emergency treatment you should carry, and which triggers or medicines to avoid. Clarify when a future episode needs emergency care rather than a routine appointment.
