What to expect from antihistamine treatment for drug rash

A drug rash can follow a newly started medicine, a dose change, or a medicine taken again after a break. Antihistamines can calm histamine-related itch and some raised areas, but the rash may continue while the body responds to the medicine. They may not control blistering, skin pain, peeling, mouth sores, or involvement of the eyes.

Do not stop an essential prescription on your own, and do not restart a suspected medicine to test it. The prescriber needs the complete medicine list, start dates, dose changes, and photographs or a description of how the rash changed.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly about a new rash. They can decide whether the suspected medicine should be paused, replaced, or continued while you are assessed. Take an antihistamine only as directed, and check before combining it with other products that may cause drowsiness. Avoid alcohol if the medicine makes you sleepy.

Use gentle skin care and avoid scratching. Keep the medicine packaging or an accurate list of all prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and supplements available for the consultation.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, rapidly spreading swelling, blistering, skin pain, peeling, or sores in the mouth, eyes, or genital area. These features can represent a serious medication reaction and need urgent assessment.

Get prompt advice if fever, facial swelling, unusual tiredness, or a quickly worsening rash develops, even if itching improves after an antihistamine.
