Angioedema is swelling deeper in the skin, commonly affecting the lips, eyelids, hands, feet, or face. When histamine is involved, an oral antihistamine can reduce itching, hives, and some swelling by blocking histamine signals. It may not help every cause, including some medicine-related forms, so the trigger and pattern matter. Improvement can be gradual, and the prescriber may choose a non-drowsy option or another plan based on your symptoms.

Use only the recommended dose and check before combining products that can cause drowsiness. Until you know how the medicine affects you, be cautious with driving, alcohol, and tasks requiring alertness. Record foods, medicines, stings, infections, or exposures around an episode, and tell a clinician if attacks recur. Do not stop a prescribed medicine suspected of causing swelling without medical advice unless emergency services direct you to do so.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue, mouth, throat, or neck swelling; trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking; wheezing; faintness; or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt medical review for severe abdominal pain, repeated episodes, or swelling that does not improve, because antihistamines are not a substitute for airway care.
