Tinea incognito is ringworm whose appearance has been changed by a topical steroid or another anti-inflammatory product. The edge may be less obvious, redness can be diffuse, and the infection may extend beyond the original area. A clinician may choose oral treatment when the infection is extensive, persistent, or difficult to treat on the skin surface. After steroid use is stopped under medical guidance, the fungal pattern may become easier to recognize before it gradually settles.

Tell the prescriber exactly which steroid, combination cream, or home remedy was used and for how long. Do not restart that product unless specifically instructed. Take oral medicine as prescribed and apply only the topical treatment recommended for the confirmed diagnosis. Keep the area dry, wash hands after applying medicine, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or cosmetics. Photographing the rash at consistent intervals can help show whether its border, scale, or spread is changing between visits.

Arrange prompt review if the rash continues to expand, becomes painful, develops pus, or affects the face or eyes. Contact the prescribing team for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, a widespread medicine-related rash, or facial swelling. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or swelling of the mouth or throat. Reassessment is also needed when the diagnosis was based only on appearance and the rash does not respond as expected.
