What to expect from oral antifungal treatment for nail fungus

Nail fungus, also called onychomycosis, can thicken, discolor, crumble, or separate a nail from its bed. Oral treatment reaches the infected nail through the bloodstream, but damaged nail does not become normal at once. A clear area may first appear near the base and slowly move forward as the nail grows. Toenails generally show change more slowly than fingernails. The diagnosis may be checked before tablets are chosen because injury, psoriasis, or other nail conditions can resemble fungal infection.

Take each dose as directed and complete the prescribed course unless your clinician tells you to stop. Share a full list of medicines, supplements, alcohol use, and liver history before treatment; some combinations need special planning. Attend any requested blood tests or review visits. Keep nails short, dry feet carefully, change damp socks, and avoid sharing clippers or footwear. Treat coexisting athlete’s foot if advised, since infection on nearby skin can help the nail problem return. Do not judge the result only by the old damaged nail at its tip.

Contact your clinician promptly if you develop yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal discomfort, a spreading rash, or facial swelling. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the mouth or throat. Arrange reassessment if pain, redness, drainage, or swelling develops around the nail, or if the nail changes continue without a healthy section emerging.
