What to expect from oral antifungal treatment for jock itch

Jock itch, or tinea cruris, is a fungal infection affecting the groin and nearby inner thighs. It often causes itch, a spreading scaly edge, burning, or soreness. Oral treatment may be considered when the area is extensive, symptoms persist despite suitable cream, or infection keeps returning. A clinician may check the rash because yeast, eczema, irritation, and bacterial infection can produce similar discomfort. The border may stop spreading before the colour and scaling have fully normalised.

Take the medicine exactly as directed and do not stop or restart it without advice. Wash gently, pat the groin dry, change underwear after sweating, and choose loose clothing that reduces rubbing. Treating athlete's foot at the same time may be discussed if fungus on the feet is being transferred to the groin. Keep towels and clothing personal, and wash them regularly. Avoid steroid creams unless prescribed, as they can mask or worsen a fungal rash.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness, blistering, or peeling skin after a dose. Contact the prescriber promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe nausea, unusual tiredness, persistent abdominal pain, or a widespread rash. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, pus, rapidly increasing redness, marked swelling, or severe pain. If itching continues despite treatment, the diagnosis or source of reinfection may need review.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, why tablets are suitable, how long the course should last, and whether feet or household items could be maintaining reinfection. Clarify missed-dose instructions, medicine interactions, and the symptoms that require a call.
