What to expect from oral antibiotics for acne for hidradenitis suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa causes recurring painful lumps, drainage, and sometimes connected tunnels in skin folds such as the underarms, groin, or under the breasts. An oral antibiotic may be selected for anti-inflammatory effects and to help manage inflammation around affected follicles. It is not a cure for every part of the condition and may not close established tunnels on its own.

Your clinician may assess fewer new lumps, less tenderness, reduced drainage, and easier movement. The plan can also include wound care, friction reduction, topical treatment, or another medical option depending on the areas involved.

Take the medicine on the prescribed schedule and follow instructions about meals, water, and sunlight. Keep draining areas covered as advised, wash gently, and choose loose clothing that reduces rubbing. Do not squeeze lumps or insert products into openings unless your care team specifically recommends them.

Tell the prescriber about pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, other medicines, and bowel or liver problems. Record new lumps, pain, drainage, and skin reactions so the next review can address the actual pattern of your flares.

Seek prompt care if redness spreads, pain rapidly worsens, drainage becomes foul-smelling, fever develops, or a wound makes movement difficult. Urgent help is appropriate for trouble breathing, facial swelling, fainting, or a widespread rash after a dose. Severe diarrhoea also needs prompt medical advice.

Ask whether the antibiotic is intended mainly to reduce inflammation, how you will judge progress, and when the plan should be reviewed. Ask how to care for draining areas, whether a tunnel needs a separate procedure, and what to do if a flare appears during treatment.
