Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, also called CCCA, is a scarring form of hair loss that often begins near the crown and can expand outward. An oral antibiotic may be chosen for an anti-inflammatory effect when the scalp is tender, itchy, burning, or showing active follicle inflammation. It is not a hair-growth supplement and does not reverse established scarring.

Your dermatologist will look for reduced scalp symptoms, less scaling or pustule formation, and slower progression. Hair density may not quickly reflect control of inflammation, so scalp examination and symptom tracking are useful.

Take each dose as directed and follow advice about water, meals, sunlight, and interactions. Tell your dermatologist about hair products, chemical treatments, tight hairstyles, and scalp practices that cause soreness. Gentle handling can help avoid adding traction or irritation while the scalp is inflamed.

Photograph the same scalp areas in consistent lighting and record burning, itch, tenderness, pustules, or increased shedding. Report new symptoms rather than changing the dose yourself. Your clinician may combine the antibiotic with a topical or other anti-inflammatory treatment.

Contact your care team quickly if scalp pain, pustules, crusting, or spreading redness increases, or if hair loss seems to accelerate. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a widespread rash after a dose. Severe diarrhoea also warrants prompt medical advice.
