What to expect from operative hysteroscopy for uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of uterine muscle. Hysteroscopy is suited to a fibroid that bulges into the cavity, where it may contribute to heavy bleeding, cramping, or fertility concerns. Fibroids located mainly within the uterine wall or on its outer surface usually need a different approach.

The clinician views the cavity with a camera and removes or reduces the accessible fibroid using specialised instruments. The procedure may use sedation or anaesthesia, and the exact plan depends on the fibroid’s size, position, and depth.

Beforehand, discuss medicines, fasting, anaesthesia, and transport home. After treatment, mild cramps, tiredness, watery discharge, or light bleeding may occur. Follow advice about pads, bathing, sex, exercise, and returning to work; do not restart medicines that affect bleeding without checking.

A follow-up visit helps review symptoms and any tissue assessment. Ask when to expect changes in bleeding and whether more than one procedure could be needed if the fibroid cannot be safely treated in one session.

Obtain urgent medical advice for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fainting, breathing difficulty, or fever with feeling very unwell. Report persistent fever, foul-smelling discharge, or pain that does not settle with the recommended treatment.

Ask whether the fibroid projects into the cavity, what removal method is planned, and how its position affects fertility or bleeding. Ask about alternatives, the chance of staged treatment, recovery restrictions, and when pregnancy planning can resume.
