What to expect from operative hysteroscopy for Asherman syndrome

Asherman syndrome involves scar tissue, also called intrauterine adhesions, inside the uterine cavity. During operative hysteroscopy, the clinician views the cavity and carefully releases scar bands so the space can be assessed and treated. Anaesthesia or sedation is chosen with you before the procedure.

The findings may show how extensive the adhesions are and whether the uterine cavity needs further treatment. A temporary device or medicine may sometimes be recommended afterward to help keep treated surfaces apart while they heal.

Follow instructions about fasting, medicines, and arranging an adult to take you home if sedation or anaesthesia is planned. Mild cramping, watery discharge, or light bleeding can occur afterward. Use only the pain relief and activity plan provided by your care team.

Keep the follow-up appointment, because the cavity may need reassessment and menstrual or fertility plans may need adjusting. Tell the team if you have a pregnancy possibility, an infection, or medicines that affect bleeding.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing abdominal pain, fainting, breathing difficulty, or a high temperature with feeling unwell. Contact the clinic for foul-smelling discharge, persistent fever, or pain that is not improving with the recommended medicine.

Ask how much scar tissue is present, whether treatment may need to be staged, and whether a temporary device or medication is planned. Ask when sex, exercise, bathing, and attempts to conceive can safely resume.
