What to Expect from Nutrition Support in Head and Neck Cancer

Short answer
You can expect a personalised nutrition assessment, practical help with eating symptoms, and a plan that may include supplements or tube feeding when swallowing or intake becomes difficult.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Support may include
- Food advice, symptom management, supplements or tube feeding
- Teams involved
- Dietitian, oncology team and swallowing specialists as needed
What nutrition support involves
A dietitian or nutrition team will ask about your usual food and drink, weight changes, appetite, swallowing, mouth comfort, bowel habits and ability to prepare meals. They may coordinate with your oncology, speech and language therapy, dental or nursing teams.
Head and neck cancer and its treatment can make chewing or swallowing harder. Dry mouth, mouth soreness, altered taste, thick saliva, nausea or tiredness may reduce intake. Support focuses on preserving strength and hydration while adapting texture, flavour, temperature and portion size to what you can manage.
Advice may include nourishing drinks, softer or blended meals, food fortification and symptom-specific strategies. If eating and drinking do not provide enough nourishment, the team may discuss enteral feeding through a tube. The plan can change during treatment and recovery.
How to prepare and take part
Bring a record of what you manage to eat and drink, any recent weight changes, and a list of medicines or supplements. Tell the team which foods feel difficult, whether fluids make you cough, and whether pain or fatigue stops you finishing meals. Do not start high-dose supplements or herbal products without checking first.
Follow the texture and swallowing advice given by your care team. Small, frequent meals and calorie-dense additions may be easier than large meals, but the safest approach depends on your swallowing assessment. Keep prescribed mouth care and pain control appointments, because comfort can affect your ability to eat.
When to seek care
Contact your oncology or nutrition team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are eating or drinking much less than planned, cough or choke during meals, or notice worsening mouth pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation. Ask how to record tube-feeding problems if you have a feeding tube.
Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden inability to swallow saliva, signs of serious dehydration such as fainting or marked confusion, or a feeding tube that has come out or is blocked and cannot be flushed according to your instructions.
Questions for your doctor
Ask who will review your nutrition, which foods and textures are safest for you, how to manage dry mouth or mouth soreness, when a supplement or feeding tube should be considered, and whom to call outside clinic hours if swallowing or tube feeding changes.
Questions people ask
Will nutrition support always mean a feeding tube?
No. The team may first adjust food texture, meal pattern, drinks and symptom treatment. A feeding tube is discussed when oral intake is not meeting your needs or swallowing is unsafe.
Can nutrition advice change during treatment?
Yes. Mouth soreness, taste changes, saliva changes and swallowing ability can vary, so your plan may be reviewed and adjusted throughout treatment and recovery.
