What to expect from NIPT for Down syndrome

NIPT examines small fragments of placental DNA found in your blood during pregnancy. It can screen for an extra copy of chromosome 21, which is associated with Down syndrome, and may also assess other chromosome differences depending on the test ordered. A low-chance result reduces concern but cannot rule out every condition.

A high-chance result does not confirm that the baby has Down syndrome. A result may also be inconclusive when there is not enough usable placental DNA or another technical issue. Your clinician or genetic counsellor can explain the result alongside ultrasound findings and your pregnancy history.

The test involves a routine blood draw and usually does not require special preparation. Ask when and how results will be shared. If the result is high chance or inconclusive, discuss whether repeating the screen, having detailed ultrasound assessment or choosing a diagnostic test such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling is appropriate for you. These options have different timing and considerations.

NIPT itself usually requires no urgent aftercare beyond observing the blood-draw site. Contact your maternity team if the site has persistent bleeding, increasing swelling or signs of infection. Seek prompt pregnancy care for vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, severe pain or reduced fetal movement when movement is normally expected.

Ask which chromosomes the chosen test covers, what an inconclusive result means, how quickly results are expected, who will explain a high-chance result, and which diagnostic options are available.
