What to expect from narrowband UVB phototherapy for morphea

Morphea can create firm, discoloured patches as inflammation affects the skin and nearby tissue. Narrowband UVB is generally considered for selected superficial disease, where light can reach the involved skin. It is not a substitute for assessing deeper, rapidly progressive, or function-limiting disease. Your dermatologist may compare the colour, softness, thickness, and borders of patches over time using examination and photographs.

Keep every appointment if possible because the treatment plan depends on a measured sequence of exposures. Report new areas, tightness, reduced movement, or changes in colour before the next visit. Arrive with the treated skin free from products unless your clinic says otherwise, and disclose medicines that increase light sensitivity. Protect treated areas from extra recreational UV exposure, and follow the prescribed moisturising or anti-inflammatory plan rather than changing it independently.

Tell your dermatologist promptly about blistering, severe burning, persistent redness, or unusual swelling after treatment. Arrange an earlier review if a patch is hardening quickly, spreading, crossing a joint, or limiting movement. New weakness, significant pain, or symptoms involving the eyes or mouth need timely assessment because they may require a different treatment approach.

Ask whether the morphea is superficial enough for UVB, what signs will show that inflammation is settling, and how deeper disease will be monitored. Also ask how to protect unaffected skin and whether current medicines need review before the first session.
