What to expect from MPFL reconstruction for patellar dislocation

Short answer
Expect the knee to be protected in a brace, then gradually strengthened and retrained for stability after MPFL reconstruction.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early priority
- Protect the graft and regain controlled movement.
- Later focus
- Build quadriceps strength and kneecap stability.
What reconstruction does
The medial patellofemoral ligament helps keep the kneecap aligned as the knee bends. Reconstruction uses a graft to recreate this stabilising restraint, sometimes alongside treatment of cartilage or bone alignment. Swelling, stiffness and discomfort around the kneecap are common early experiences. A brace and crutches may limit movement or weight-bearing while the graft settles.
Supporting rehabilitation
Use the brace and crutches exactly as instructed, protect the wound and complete the prescribed exercises. Early physiotherapy focuses on swelling control, safe knee movement and quadriceps activation; later work adds strength, balance and movement control. Avoid kneeling, pivoting and impact until your surgeon or physiotherapist allows them. Return to sport follows demonstrated control rather than eagerness alone.
When to seek help
Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, severe swelling, uncontrolled pain or new calf pain. Seek urgent care for a cold or pale foot, sudden marked weakness, chest pain or difficulty breathing. A new kneecap shift, fall or inability to bear weight should be assessed promptly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how far the brace may open, when weight-bearing and driving are allowed, which exercises protect the graft, and what strength and movement tests are needed before sport.

Questions people ask
Will the knee feel stiff after MPFL reconstruction?
Stiffness and swelling can occur during early healing. Prescribed movement and physiotherapy help restore range safely.
Can the kneecap dislocate again?
Rehabilitation and gradual return to activity support stability, but new slipping or dislocation should be reported for assessment.
