What to expect from MMR vaccination for rubella

The MMR vaccine trains the immune system to recognise rubella, along with measles and mumps. It is preventive care, so it does not treat rubella that is already developing. A clinician will check your health history, previous doses, allergies and any reason to delay vaccination.

The injection is usually quick. Some people notice soreness, redness or swelling where the needle went in. A mild temperature, tiredness or a rash can appear later as the immune response develops. These effects generally settle without specific treatment.

Tell the vaccinator if you feel unwell, have had a serious reaction to a vaccine, are pregnant or take medicines that affect immunity. Follow the clinic's advice about observation after the injection. Keep the arm comfortable, drink fluids and use only medicines recommended for you if discomfort occurs.

Keep a record of the dose and ask when any further dose is due. MMR vaccination does not cause rubella infection, but a short-lived rash or fever can be unsettling. Avoid close contact with anyone your clinician has identified as especially vulnerable if you develop symptoms and need advice.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly spreading reaction after vaccination. Contact a clinician promptly if fever is severe or persistent, the injection site becomes increasingly painful, or you are worried about a child who is unusually drowsy or difficult to wake.
