What to Expect from MMR Vaccination for Mumps

MMR presents harmless vaccine material to the immune system so it can learn to recognise measles, mumps and rubella. It does not treat mumps that is already causing symptoms. The timing of doses is based on vaccination history, age and clinical guidance.

Before giving it, the vaccinator may ask about allergies, immune-suppressing medicines, pregnancy where relevant, recent vaccines and previous reactions. A tender arm, mild fever, tiredness or a mild rash may follow. These reactions usually settle without special treatment.

Take your vaccination record and a list of regular medicines. Tell the clinic if you have an immune condition, are receiving immune-suppressing treatment, or previously reacted badly to a vaccine. Arrange clothing that leaves the upper arm accessible and stay as long as the clinic advises afterwards.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, widespread hives, collapse or sudden severe weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a persistent high fever, severe illness, unusual drowsiness or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
