How MMR vaccination works

The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise measles without causing measles illness in a healthy person. It also covers mumps and rubella. Protection develops after vaccination and the recommended schedule may depend on age, previous doses, health conditions and local guidance.

A healthcare professional will check vaccination history, allergies, immune problems, pregnancy status where relevant, and current illness. A sore arm, mild fever or feeling unwell can occur. A light rash or swollen glands may also appear for a short time.

Preparing and recovering

Bring your vaccination record and tell the vaccinator about severe allergies, immune-suppressing treatment, pregnancy or a previous reaction. Wear clothing that allows access to the upper arm. After the injection, remain for the observation period advised by the clinic and keep the record updated.

Fluids, rest and suitable comfort measures can help with mild reactions. Do not assume vaccination treats an existing measles infection; contact a clinician if you have fever and rash or have been exposed.
