What to expect from microwave sweat gland treatment for bromhidrosis

Bromhidrosis is odour associated with substances produced when sweat interacts with skin bacteria. The clinician first checks the underarm skin and marks the area to be treated. After local numbing, a device places microwave energy beneath the surface to heat selected sweat glands. The sensation may include pressure, warmth or brief stinging as the handpiece moves.

The treated glands may produce less sweat, which can reduce moisture that contributes to odour. Odour can also be influenced by bacteria, hair, clothing and other skin conditions, so improvement is not identical for everyone. A temporary change in skin sensation, bruised feeling or fullness can follow the procedure.

Before treatment, mention rashes, broken skin, infections, allergies, medicines and any prior procedures in the underarms. Follow the clinic's directions about washing, shaving and deodorant. Plan a comfortable top with arm room, because friction can make early tenderness more noticeable.

Wash clothing that holds odour and follow ordinary hygiene guidance, since the procedure does not remove every source of underarm smell.

Call the clinic if swelling is increasing, redness spreads, the skin becomes hot, fluid drains from the area, or pain is not settling. A fever or feeling generally unwell can signal infection and needs assessment. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, widespread hives, marked facial swelling or rapidly progressive symptoms.
