What to Expect from Microneedling for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks form when skin stretches and supporting fibres change. Microneedling makes controlled micro-injuries along the affected lines, encouraging a repair response and collagen remodelling. It may make some marks less noticeable, but the response depends on whether they are newer and coloured or older and pale, as well as their width, depth, and location. The goal is blending and texture improvement rather than erasing the marks.

The area is cleaned and may be numbed before the device is moved over the marks. Prickling, warmth, redness, pinpoint bleeding, and mild swelling are possible. Tightness, dryness, or flaking may follow. Changes take time to develop, and the treated skin can look more irritated before it looks calmer.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy or breastfeeding, active rash, infection, cold sores, eczema, keloids, medicines, and previous poor healing. Avoid treatment over sunburn or broken skin. Follow the aftercare plan: cleanse gently, use the recommended moisturiser, and protect exposed areas from sunlight. Do not scratch, scrub, wax, use strong exfoliants, or soak the area in pools or hot water until the skin has healed. Wear loose clothing where friction could irritate the treated marks.

Contact the clinic if pain, heat, swelling, or redness is worsening, or if the marks become increasingly tender, ooze, develop pus, or are accompanied by fever. Report blisters, unusual darkening or lightening, and delayed healing. Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, widespread hives, or sudden severe swelling.

Ask whether the age, colour, depth, and location of your stretch marks affect the expected response. Discuss other options, session spacing, numbing, clothing and activity restrictions, sun protection, and how the clinician will judge progress safely.
