What to Expect from Microneedling for Acne Scars

Microneedling uses fine needles to create tiny, deliberate channels in the skin. The healing response can encourage new collagen and improve the look of depressed, uneven acne scars. It does not erase scars or suit every scar type; raised scars, active breakouts, infection, or inflamed skin may need a different plan first. Results develop gradually as the skin remodels, so several appointments may be discussed rather than a single visit.

During a session, the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing product may be used. The device then passes over the selected area. You may notice prickling, warmth, or pinpoint bleeding. Redness and mild swelling can resemble sunburn afterward, while tightness, dryness, or light flaking may follow as the surface settles.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about active acne, cold sores, eczema, keloid scarring, medicines, and recent procedures. Arrive with clean skin and follow instructions about pausing irritating products. Afterward, use only the recommended gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sun protection. Avoid picking, vigorous exercise, swimming, saunas, exfoliating acids, retinoids, and makeup until the clinician says the surface has recovered. Keep each appointment spaced according to your skin response.

Contact the treating clinic if redness or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop increasing pain, warmth, pus, fever, spreading blisters, or marked darkening. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. A new outbreak of painful acne or a cold sore should also be reported before another session.
