What to expect from microdiscectomy for a herniated disc

Through a small lower-back incision, the surgeon moves tissue aside and removes the disc fragment irritating the nerve. Leg pain may ease quickly, while numbness or weakness can take longer to change. Back soreness around the wound is expected during early recovery.

Take short walks as instructed and change position regularly. Keep the wound protected, take medicines as prescribed, and avoid lifting, forceful bending and twisting until cleared. Physiotherapy may build trunk and leg strength. Increase work, driving and exercise only after your team confirms it is safe.

Get urgent help for new leg weakness, numbness around the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty passing urine. Contact your surgical team for increasing leg pain, fever, spreading redness or wound drainage. Chest pain or shortness of breath requires emergency care.

Ask which symptoms the operation should address, how to care for the incision, what lifting limit applies, when driving and work are reasonable, and how recurrence symptoms should be handled.
