What to expect from microdiscectomy for cauda equina syndrome

Cauda equina syndrome involves pressure on the bundle of nerves at the lower end of the spinal canal. Microdiscectomy removes the disc fragment causing compression through an incision in the lower back. The operation aims to protect or recover nerve function, but bladder, bowel, sexual and leg symptoms may not change immediately. Hospital staff may check strength, sensation and bladder emptying repeatedly.

Walk only as directed and use the prescribed pain relief safely. Keep the wound protected, avoid lifting and bending until your team gives limits, and attend neurological and surgical follow-up. Rehabilitation may address walking, leg strength, sensation and bladder or bowel care. Tell clinicians clearly whether urination, bowel control, numbness or leg weakness is improving, unchanged or worse.

Seek emergency care for new or worsening difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or anus, or increasing weakness in either leg. Contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, severe headache, worsening back pain or new leg pain. Chest pain or breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Ask which nerve functions will be monitored, what bladder plan applies, which activities are restricted, how rehabilitation is arranged, and whom to contact if sensation or strength changes.
