What to expect from a mental health assessment for burnout

Short answer
Expect questions about exhaustion, stressors, sleep, mood, concentration, daily functioning, and changes that may restore your wellbeing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Stress, symptoms, functioning, and recovery needs
- Useful preparation
- A record of pressures, sleep, and daily impact
What the assessment covers
The clinician may ask when symptoms began, what demands you face, whether rest helps, and how you are managing work, study, caregiving, relationships, and basic tasks. They may explore headaches, tension, appetite, sleep, irritability, detachment, low mood, anxiety, and loss of enjoyment.
They will also consider whether another condition, medication, substance use, or physical problem could explain or add to the symptoms. The assessment helps separate burnout from depression or anxiety without assuming that every period of stress has the same cause.
How to prepare and take part
Write down your main pressures, symptoms, sleep pattern, energy changes, and what has or has not helped. Describe a typical difficult day and any impact on attendance, performance, safety, or self-care. You can bring a support person and ask for a written summary of agreed steps.
Your plan might include workload boundaries, time away from a stressor, sleep support, talking therapy, treatment for a related condition, or a review with your workplace or school. Small changes are easier to judge when you set a follow-up point.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent help if you feel unable to keep yourself safe, have thoughts of suicide or harming another person, cannot care for basic needs, or develop severe confusion or unusual experiences. Contact emergency services for immediate danger. Seek prompt medical advice for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening.
Questions you may want to ask
Ask: What symptoms need checking for another cause? Which changes should I make first? Can I have therapy or occupational support? How will we know whether I am recovering, and when should we review the plan?

Questions people ask
Is burnout the same as depression?
They can overlap, but an assessment looks at the pattern, triggers, functioning, and other symptoms before planning care.
What happens after the assessment?
You may receive practical changes, psychological support, medical review, or follow-up to see how symptoms respond.
