What to expect from meningococcal vaccination for meningococcal disease

The vaccine prepares immune defences against selected meningococcal bacteria. These bacteria can cause invasive disease, including meningitis and infection in the bloodstream. The vaccine is preventive; it is not a treatment for fever, rash, or suspected meningococcal disease.

The schedule can differ according to age, medical risk, travel plans, exposure concerns, and the vaccine product. Before vaccination, mention allergies, a previous vaccine reaction, pregnancy, illness, and medicines that affect the immune system.

The injection site may feel sore or look red, and some people feel tired or develop a headache or mild fever. Fluids, rest, and appropriate symptom relief may help; follow the advice given by your clinician. Keep your record and check whether additional vaccination is planned.

A short observation period may follow the injection. If you feel unwell later, note when symptoms began and contact a healthcare professional if they are severe, worsening, or unexpected.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or facial swelling, collapse, or widespread hives after the injection. At any time, a sudden fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, vomiting, light sensitivity, or a rapidly spreading purple rash requires emergency assessment.
