What to expect from medicated shampoo treatment for fungal acne

Malassezia folliculitis can cause many similar small bumps, often with itch, on areas such as the forehead, chest, shoulders, or back. A medicated shampoo may reduce the yeast-related contribution on the skin when that is the working diagnosis.

The appearance can overlap with ordinary acne, irritation, or folliculitis from another cause. If the bumps do not respond as expected, that does not mean you should keep increasing use; the diagnosis and plan may need reassessment.

Apply a thin lather to the areas advised, leave it for the recommended contact time, and rinse well. Avoid the eyes and broken skin. Use clean towels and change out of sweaty clothing after exercise, while keeping other skincare simple during an irritated flare.

Do not layer several harsh acne products or scrub the bumps. Dryness, stinging, or redness should be reported if it continues. Your clinician may adjust how often the product is used or suggest a different formulation.

Seek review if lesions become painful, deep, crusted, widespread, or leave new marks, or if itching is severe. Prompt care is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a blistering reaction. A persistent rash may need testing or an alternative diagnosis.

Ask which body areas to treat, the contact time, the planned frequency, and when improvement should be reviewed. Ask which moisturiser and sunscreen are compatible, and whether other acne products should be paused.
