The clinician asks about the incident, pain, stiffness, headaches, dizziness, sleep, concentration, and arm symptoms. They check neck and shoulder movement, strength, sensation, balance, and how symptoms respond to activity. This helps distinguish a straightforward recovery pattern from problems needing medical assessment.

Manual therapy can include gentle soft-tissue work, mobilisation, or supported movement. Early care commonly emphasises reassurance, comfortable activity, and restoring normal movement rather than forceful stretching or prolonged immobilisation. The technique and intensity should change as your symptoms change.

Keep your therapist informed about headaches, visual symptoms, nausea, arm tingling, or pain that is becoming more widespread. Follow the movement programme in small, regular amounts and return to driving, work, and exercise in stages when movement and attention are adequate. Avoid self-manipulating the neck or pushing through a sharp increase in symptoms.

A diary of sleep, activity, and symptom flare-ups can help identify a manageable pace. If progress stalls, the plan may need a fresh examination rather than simply stronger treatment.

Seek immediate care after whiplash for worsening severe headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, seizure, trouble speaking, vision loss, new weakness or numbness, or difficulty walking. Emergency assessment is also needed for severe neck pain after a major collision or breathing and swallowing difficulty.
