What to Expect from LED Light Therapy for Acne

LED devices deliver selected wavelengths of light to the skin. Blue light is commonly used to target acne-related bacteria, while red light may help calm visible inflammation. The light does not remove blocked pores, so a clinician may combine it with a wider acne plan.

A session usually involves cleansing the skin, protecting the eyes when needed, positioning the device, and sitting under the light for a short treatment period. The skin may feel warm or look mildly flushed afterward. Improvement is usually assessed over a series of visits, and new breakouts can still occur.

Attend with clean skin unless your clinic gives different instructions. Tell the clinician about medicines that increase light sensitivity, active skin conditions, and recent procedures. After treatment, use gentle skincare, moisturiser, and daytime sun protection. Do not pick spots or add irritating products simply because treatment has started.

Contact the treating clinic if redness becomes intense, swelling persists, blistering develops, or the treated skin becomes increasingly painful. Seek prompt medical advice for eye pain or vision changes after a session. Severe, scarring, or rapidly worsening acne also needs an assessment because light therapy may not address every cause.
