What to expect from laser hair removal for Becker nevus

A Becker nevus is a patch of darker skin that may become thicker or more hairy over time. Hair-removal treatment is directed at the hair follicle, not at the pigment that gives the patch its colour. The clinician may examine and document the area first, especially if its appearance has changed.

You may notice brief warmth, tingling or snapping during treatment. Redness around follicles and mild swelling can follow for a short period. Pigmented skin can respond differently to laser energy, so device choice and settings should be individualised rather than copied from another body area.

Tell the clinician about recent tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, previous reactions and any change in the nevus. Follow instructions about trimming hair and avoiding plucking before the appointment. Protect the treated area from sun exposure and use only the aftercare products recommended for your skin.

Keep follow-up appointments so hair reduction and the appearance of the nevus can be reviewed separately. If your main concern is the colour or texture of the patch, ask about options designed for that concern instead of expecting hair removal to change it.

Report blistering, marked swelling, increasing pain, pus or redness that continues to spread. Arrange a medical review for a nevus that develops a new persistent dark area, uneven border, bleeding, a sore that does not heal or a noticeable change in size or texture. Do not use laser treatment to postpone assessment of a changing pigmented lesion.

Ask whether the nevus should be examined before hair removal, whether a test spot is appropriate, what hair reduction is realistic for your hair colour, and how the clinician will monitor the patch separately from the treatment response.
